All solar panels are good(they produce electric). Are you now looking at buying your own panels as there are much better options available if you're happy to put in the legwork, there's also many helpful posters on here who'll "hold your hand" so to speak and advise what's a good deal and what is not.2 kWp SEbE , 2kWp SSW & 2.5kWp NWbW.....in sunny North Derbyshire17.7kWh Givenergy battery added(for the power hungry kids)0

are ikea solar panels by hanergy any good?
Yes and no. They use low efficiency panels, which are cheaper, but you need about twice as many to make up the kW's.
The problem therefore, is do you have enough roof space for 24 to 30 panels, and tying back to your other posts, what about weight - since the hanergy panels weigh about the same, but twice as many, so if there are any weight/strength concerns, this could be an issue for you.
Note: Weight isn't usually too much of a concern since at approx 20kg each, a PV system will only weigh about 300kg, so about the weight of 3 big men, 4 average men spread very evenly acrooss the roof. But a hanergy system will mean more weight ...... but spread over a bigger area too ..... so perhaps not an issue, just worth mentioning if work is needed to beef up the roof structure.
Mart.Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

Not sure what Ikea are thinking of, maybe they can get the panels very cheaply and therefore there is a good markup for them. But for the customer I don't think they're generally a good idea. As Mart said they are lower efficiency panels than is normal so you need more of them for the same electricity generation. Fine if you have an unusually large roof, but most homes UK homes don't have very big usable roof areas.
Especially now you can get 270 - 285W panels for not much of a premium, I don't think Hanergy is good value for money. Will probably pay similar or more for say a 3kW Hanergy system as for a 4kW system of more normal panels.

Just for reference:
I have been quoted £4350 by Hanergy (Ikea) for an eighteen 120w panel system with first year estimated yield of 2021 kWh.
The estimated first year return on investment is 11%.
MyPlanet have quoted £9900 for a twelve 250w panel system with first year estimated yield of 2955 kWh.
The estimated first year return on investment is 7%.We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Neither of those are good.
18x 120W panels are only 2.16 kW. You should be able to get 4 kW for not so much more, so almost twice as much electricity and FIT for not much more money.
£9900 for 3kW is laughable. Ask them if it's buy one get one free as even if it was it wouldn't be very good value.
Quoting for twelve panels suggests limited roof space, so you might want higher efficiency panels. Was quoted £5995 for 12x 330W panels.
Remember that provided they're installed on the same aspect etc the amount of electricity you'll get and amount of FIT will be proportional to the total kW of the system, so 4kW will produce twice as much as 2kW etc.

Hiya and welcome to the forum.
Both quotes are massively overpriced. If you Google "my planet solar" you see on page one a link to a thread on here, explaining the stuff they get up to. Getting that link onto page one, required many MSE'ers to reference that thread and the company name in an attempt to warn people about that company.
This is the main warning thread, but there are others :
I've been a massive fool...My planet UK Solar.
[Edit: I see you've already found that thread and posted. Well done, the more the merrier! M.]

What is the going rate these days for a 4kw system installed? Last time I thought about it a few years ago it was between 8-12k
I am thinking about it again for when the snake oil seller comes to visitNO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0 -
Thanks for the comments.
The two quotes are based on a roof 6.3m x 4m.
Is the estimated kWh perhaps considerably lower than the true output due to the selling regulations that require them to quote at certain percentages?
I received a copy of the Solibro SL2-F Panel product sheet today from the Hanergy sales advisor.Solibro's thin-film modules offer world record efficiencies up to 13.1 % in serial production. The framed modules SL2-F are especially suited for residential rooftops. All SL2-F modules are "Made in Germany" and are tested according to very high standards in order to insure a long lifetime and stable module performance.
Performance Under Standard Test Conditions (STC)
Minimum Power - Pmpp [W] 120,0
Short Circuit Current - Isc [A] 1.69
Open Circuit Voltage - Voc [V] 97.6
Current at Pmpp - Impp [A] 1.56
Voltage at Pmpp - Vmpp [V] 76.9
Nominal efficiency η [%] ≥ 12.6
One of the things the My Planet sales advisor keeps saying is that the (Hanergy) Chinese panels aren't as good. According to the Hanergy sales advisor in store their panels are made in Germany and that appears to be confirmed by the product sheet he has sent me.
These are the specs for the Sunmodule SW250 panels that My Planet are quoting for:Performance Under Standard Test Conditions (STC)
Maximum Power - Pmax 250 Wp
Open circuit voltage - Uoc 37.8 V
Maximum power point voltage - Umpp 31.1 V
Short circuit current - Isc 8.28 A
Maximum power point current - Impp 8.05 AWe’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Do yourself a favour and walk away from both of these companies.
I wear my heart on my sleeve, so apologies for any offence, but....
MyPlanet come across as double glazing salesmen of the 80's, with all the connotations that contains.
The other is overselling an inferior product in the domestic market and trading on the reputation that IKEA have for value based quality furniture.
As others have said, if you have the space for "proper" panels then that is what you should be going for.
The market seems to be saying that sub £5k for 4kWp systems with a hot water diverter ( if you have a hot water cylinder) and monitor, including a branded inverter, EPC, scaffold, mounting, labour, certification , FiT registration support, but no cuddly toy, IS eminently doable.
Everyone here wants you, to get the right deal for you.
I would ask you to take stock of all the info you have been given from the companies and from here, and see if you can see who has a vested interest in you buying solar pv?
Nobody here knows you, they just don't want you to be ripped off.
They don't want you to be sold a system that can only offer half the capacity that you could get.
They don't want you to pay twice the market rate.
So, the ball is in your court... Good luck.4kWp, SSE, SolarEdge P300 optimisers & SE3500 Inverter, in occasionally sunny Corby, Northants.
Now with added Sunsynk 5kw hybrid ecco inverter & 15kWh Fogstar batteries. Oh Octopus Energy too.0 -

Thank you.
I've found a number of threads with people sharing quotes for systems but none seem to mention the names of the supplier/fitter.
What's your opinion on HIES?
