Hi, what you've cut out is not a purlin. I think the horizontal timber resting on the one you've cut, on the right of the photo could be described as a purlin. I'm not so familiar with traditional roofs, but purlins are horizontal members that run the length of the roof.

Ashadegreener pick and choose their roofs, if they believe that your roof is under supported then your only other option is to either reinstate the joist or buy your own panels.
I'm no structural engineer but that just doesn't look right and would concern me if I saw it too.2 kWp SEbE , 2kWp SSW & 2.5kWp NWbW.....in sunny North Derbyshire17.7kWh Givenergy battery added(for the power hungry kids)0 -

These are purlins. Did they specifically mention the piece you've cut out?Solar install June 2022, Bath

Looks to me like you cut out sections of the spreaders. The purlin looks untouched (running the length of the roof and supporting the rafters).
Strangely though, that purlin looks a bit small, is it a 4by2? Mine is 8by3 but only had one support midway, and one spreader, whereas you appear to have 4+.
The spreaders help to stabilise the roof. I removed mine when I converted the loft, but I did add floor joists (rather than ceiling joists) and added additional bracing, so an extra 3 uprights to the purlin.
If you wanted PV (paid for yourself) then I don't think you'd have any trouble. The installers would just need to beef up the purlin/supports, shouldn't be too difficult a job.

The surveyor that come was not in the best of mood's, as I missed a phone call, called ashadegreener and they gave me his number. I called him and he was not happy.
