Don't be silly.Have amended it for you the problem is not isolated to just that part of the UK.
It didn't need amending but thanks anyway. Predominantly the problem (if it's a problem at all) is in London and the South-East with the London centric media extrapolating it to the rest of the UK by proxy.
Not sure why you've added 'affordable' - that's a simple function of a lack of housing unless you've adopted the politicians definition of affordable i.e. affordable to the occupant because they're being subsidised by someone else.0 -
Don't be silly. The root cause of the housing problem is the lack of social housing because they were sold through the right to buy scheme.
In the 70s it was considered acceptable for people on lower incomes to rent a council house and the majority of those people would have lived and died in their council house without any thought of property ownership.
The problem is that the money raised from selling off the council houses wasn't invested in building more, creating a shortage, and many of the houses sold are now being rented out by private landlords.
The landlords haven't caused the problem, they are a result of it.

Well put your money where your mouth is. Can I but yours right now at 50% off? Think of it as an investment in the younger generation.
Point already made, unsurprisingly since it's such an earth shatteringly obvious one, but, yes, of course, if you can find me a new smaller house that's also half price and also half price houses for my two kids to move into then, yes, bring it on.
Much cheaper houses would be brilliant for my family as a whole.
Just my house getting cheaper whilst all the others stayed the same? Not so much.
Conversely, i'd be thoroughly delighted if my house 'soared' in value whilst all others stayed the same.FACT.0 -
I'd sell for what I paid for it 19 years ago ...... as long as everyone else did!0

It's an exercise in thought.
Really?
You give it that much weight? Sure you are not just suffering from severe confirmation bias?
Doubt you'd be suggesting "it's an exercise in thought" should anyone have said "put your money where your mouth is, buy our house for 50% more than it's worth". No. Clearly you'd call us all manner of names to point out how utterly ridiculous the argument is.0 -

Happy to sell you my house at 50% of its current market value on two conditions:
1) you agree to reciprocate.
2) your house is worth more than mine.0 -

Mr Muddle.
That would be a fair challenge if there were an army of tin foil hatters who'd created a website in 2003 and spent more than a decade banging on about how low house prices are.0 -

Why? Is this all about what some people said somewhere else on the internet?
Should have said.0 -

A rather interesting, albeit weird, post.
I know you will run off, now, and not answer, but I would really like to know who the "us" is that just crept in here. The choice of "us" rather than "me" almost certainly has Freudian connotations.
You've really given me an exercise in thought. My early thoughts include:
'Us' as in Labour voters.
'Us' as in people who live in Devon.
'Us' who own houses (or at least half of one)
'Us' who rent houses (or at least half of one)
'Us' as in you and yet another alter Ego Blacklight
'Us' as in everyone other than Wotsthat
'Us' as in you and the other couple of nutters around, like Rugged and Crashy
Please enlighten us if you dare.....0 -

Maybe it's an idea whose time has come. Instead of wishing prices were 50% lower why not make it happen? Don't sell randomly to someone on the lookout for a house on the cheap but create a movement where everyone agrees to buy and sell at prices 50% lower than current market values.
You're passionate about this - why aren't you doing it already?
I'm not going to pay 50% more than market value for a house. As you suggest it's ridiculous but that's me and I don't live with you on the moral high ground.0
