Car tax disc- to whom?

So the car is being repossesed on Monday, and it's just occured to me that the tax disc has a few months to run and therefore a cash value.

So who does that belong to? Me? the car finance people? The OR?

I'd love it, obviously, but don't want to do anything I'm not allowed to!

I would say it's best to offer it to the OR. But I would expect they would tell you that you can keep it since it's hardly worth their while.

Also that will show good faith with the OR, and stop you wondering if they will ask you for it later if you simply pocket the money.

That's just a personal opinion. See what others think first. :)

When my car was reposessed, they insisted on having the Tax Disc. Fortunately it only had one month to go.

Personally, I would cash it in.
When I sent my caravan back to the finance co. the guy who picked it up told me I should have taken the CD and other extras out as "....thats what happens with reposessed vehicles and `vans. "

The vehicle is going straight to the auction depot where it will be sold without any of the OR`s personnel clapping their eyes on it. All they will see at OR central is the cheque from the auctioneers.

    But that`s only my opinion!!

I'd send it back to DVLA and keep the money. It's not going to be much anyway.

To avoid the problem rog2 had just remove the Tax Disc before they arrive.

Was the "they" here the OR rog2?

Technically the tax disc is an asset that belongs to your estate if there is any refund available on it.

No - it was the Finance Company - they repo'd my car before my BR. As there was only 1 full month (+3 weeks) I didn't really worry too much. The Finance Company then went on to try and collect the 'shortfall' which I declared to OR, who was very interested in how the Finance Company went about the 'repossession' (my hope is that they got short shrift from OR as they were absolute bar stewards).

In that case I would like to think that the finance company got a telling off for pinching the tax disc along with everything else. icon_twisted.gif

OK, I emailed my OR this morning and here is his reply:

It's actually a very good question - I have consulted one of my colleagues with regard to the matter and they agree that the normal proceedure would be for you to cash in the disc and send a remittance for the remaining funds to the Official Receiver. Whilst the car belongs to the finance Company the tax disc forms part of the bankruptcy estate.

    So there we go!
