Reciprocal Notice Periods

Ooh, this thread was handy timing. I've just been sent a contract which has me needing to give three months' notice while the employer would only need to give one month. (After five years it increases by one week per year of employment. I guess that's to keep it in line with the statutory minimum.)
Three months for either party is standard in my line of work at my level. I suppose it is all about how badly I want the job... there are a couple of other things in there that seem a bit one-sided/harsh as well, at least compared to my last job.
It's not so much a question of "is it legal?" (yes, it is) or "is this likely to actually be an issue for me?" (hopefully not) but more about the possibility that such terms might be indicative of a general bad attitude towards their staff.0 -
The problem is that the company can counter notice to reduce PILON/Garden leave if they want when you resign.0

As I said in my original post, I dont know if the contract law applies to employment contracts or not so it may well be that they'd lose a case if they went to an ET or CC to argue. I also dont know if the courts tend to level the contract in the higher or lower position or most likely, effectively allow the weaker party to decide for the dispute in question0
