Should I Be Paid For Training On My Days Off?

Options
Hi All,
I currently work in a restaurant, I work long days (sometimes 14 hours) and only get 1 full day off a week. My employer has asked me to complete an online level 3 course in food safety, but I have to do it in my own time on my day off, there is a rush for me to do the course as I have been promised a pay rise on completion. However this means that I do not get any time off from work.
Can anyone tell me if what my employer is asking is acceptable of me, or should they be paying me for the time it takes me as this is meant to be my own time.

Thank you in Advance :)

It is a bit cheeky, but If it leads to a payrise and a recognised certificate, suck it up and get the qualification. How would a level 3 course cost if you had to pay?

I work in accountancy and our trainees get a lower salary to reflect the fact that they get study leave. In addition, although they do get study leave, that's only for the courses and the exams - they have to do all the additional required learning/revision/question practice in their own time. They can also get sacked if they fail!

I do feel for you because you aren't getting much of a break and now you're looking at having to fill that break with studying. That sucks.

That said, if this is only a few days' effort and it's going to lead to something you can put on your CV and will command a higher salary, it would be short-sighted not to do it. What would you say at an interview - oh, I had the opportunity to study for that exam but I didn't want to because I'd have had to do it in my own time and it wasn't fair? :)

Why can't your employer incorporate this within your working week? It can't be too difficult to arrange, surely with little or no cost implication.
    Don’t be a can’t, be a can.
