Yes, in many circumstances you're better off 'self-insuring'.

Does anyone have bike insurance primarily for third party risks?

My bike is worth !!!!!! all, but when you're manoeuvring around vehicles and pedestrians a lot it's easy to see how a minor mistake could end up being quite expensive.

Is life really that 'dangerous', after all it's Fear that insurance companies build and trade on to get their cut of peoples incomes.

If you have home insurance, it will normally include liability for normal leisure use of a cycle

I'm not it's as simple as that in the modern world. Why are bumpers on modern cars still called bumpers when they cost hundreds of pounds to have professionally replaced after the tiniest scratch?

I have British Cycling membership which includes third party cover. The CTC also provides cover, though I don't know much about it.

As well as third party cover the legal advice and support is very valuable- if you need it! I'd certainly recommend being covered.
