Transferring tax relief to partner

I've sent our e-mail to 'phishing-at-hmrc.gsi.gov.uk' because I can't believe that HMRC will block those entitled to the Marriage Allowance just because the claimant doesn't have a valid passport or photocard driving licence. There must be lots of pensioner couples without either. And why would HMRC need " information about your finances such as a recent credit card or mortgage statement"? Credit cards & mortgage? What's that got to do with applying for the Marriage Allowance? They know all about our finances already!
It looks very suspicious to me.0 -
A few months back I applied for my photo-card driving license online they asked if they had my permission to use the verify service.
They asked for my passport number and identified me from that. They also then said that they could use the photograph and signature from the passport and apply it straight to my driving license.
Result: nothing to send them!
I was quite amazed at the time as it was a simple thing to do and therefore the last thing I expected from a government department!
As I said, MrsM already has a GOVERNMENT GATEWAY ID, HMG knows who she is, they transact their official business with her using this ID, why does she have to prove it again.0 -
But without one of them it is a non starter. There are enough taxes without having to pay an ID tax as well !

I have a government gateway ID too. I didn't think about using it when doing the driving licenee as it was easier to put the passport number in but if you don't have either of these then things may be more complicated.
I just read up about the verify scheme which still seems to be in beta, however their video appears to use credit reference agencies to verify your identity too, so I would be surprised if the documents listed were the ONLY way to register. Probably just the easiest.
I did however think when I registered for Government Gateway about 10 years ago that that was the whole point of the scheme, so not sure whey they have added another one?• The rich buy assets.
• The poor only have expenses.
• The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.0 -

Agree why would HMRC ever ask for credit card or mortgage statement for ID purposes The information regarding financial position will surely be based on the details already held by HMRC, ie does the relevant person have income less than their annual tax allowance.
It could be a simple matter to use a revised version of existing form R 85(?) which simply declares that your income is less than your tax allowance, changed slightly to include estimated actual income.
I for one will not be supplying cc or mortgage information.0 -
I have had the same email and have neither a photo driving licence or passport, that expired the middle of March and its not worth renewing as my husbands health problems prevent travelling overseas. I am thinking that it just means I will have to apply by some other means rather than online, but do not know who to contact to ask. I will probably wait until they contact me again, unless I find out what to do before then.0

Mrs M had this e-mail today
Looks like an on line application is out of the question then. She already has a Gov Gateway ID so why that will not suffice I don't know
But you are not wanting to transfer the the Marriage Allowance it is a transfer of personal allowance .
Those with a civil partnership can also do the transfer so not restricted to married people.
Defiitely looks like a phishing email.( they might at least have used the corect termonology)0 -
The .gov sites refers to it as the marriage allowance https://www.gov.uk/marriage-allowance0
-
There are two separate allowances.
The Married couple's allowance where either spouse was born before 6 April 1935 and the transfer of one tenth of the basic personal allowance referred to as a transferable tax allowance (available to ertc...) The .Gov site is written for everyman but it does mean that the detail is sometimes lost. The only thing that is constant is change.0
