Capitalism is such a wonderful mechanism for generating wealth that lots of people with no understanding at all of money end up with heaps of it. That's should be a cause of celebration I'd think. Alas, "a fool and his money ...." remains true. The only practical defence is probably for us to return to a way of life that involves the severe punishment of criminals, which the bien pensants have opposed throughout my lifetime. They've always found excuses for criminality.Free the dunston one next time too.0 -

Sorry to hear that. I might well be in the same boat, so having access to my pension at 55 is something I'd want to have. Health issues aside, those who work hard and plan for early retirement should be allowed to do so, without the nanny state dictating they need to go on working or wait until they're much older. By sticking the state pension age further and further back, they're creating a big gap for a large proportion of people who may not have alternative sources of income (especially from employment) in their 50's and 60's. Universal credits all round then! What a nightmare that could be.0 -

No - because ageism means that they don't recruit old people into professions like IT, law, you name it.
Also many jobs have disappeared en-masse (in favour of India). If you've spent your life working in a bank (for example) you can only really work at another bank, and they are all cutting staff.
And it's still no reason to stop someone accessing their pension, especially if the fund is large enough, or they have another income, like a small DB pension.0 -

I remember considering re-training as an accountant, I was told I was too old.
I was 36 !0 -
I sincerely hope that was the bad old days. Since 2009 you could have sued the a$$ off any organisation refusing to consider you for the training purely on the grounds of age!scoobydoo66 wrote: »lol

Then you might surely have been too old then, but you could apply again now

I'm having enough trouble with Torry, without you starting:pscoobydoo66 wrote: »My health is OK, thankyou.
The point is I have saved and planned to not go to work, I dont want to work, and there arent many jobs around. I can access my pension and live on what I saved for my later years, but you are suggesting that although I can manage quite easily without working, I should be prevented from accessing MY money, forced to look for work and possibly exist on state benefits.0 -
Sorry - my badscoobydoo66 wrote: »lol

So Torry Quine is retired on ill health but thinks the rest of us should work till we drop? Sorry but I will be leaving my very tough job next year and living on my savings and my pension pot because I don't want to work until my health degenerates until I can't enjoy my later years.0
