Hi there,
Wondering if anyone could help me in regards to the letter I have received from CRS in regards to my Gym membership with Gymetc
Here's a run down of what has happened so far -
1. I emailed 'Gymetc' to advise them that I needed to cancel my membership as I was moving to Vietnam (and they had previously told me in person that as long as I moved more than 20 miles away from my current address that I could) and advised them to contact me if they had any more questions about this.
I emailed them instead of going in to the branch as I went back to my home town (Doncaster) sooner than expected so I couldn't go in.
They then didn't email me so I assumed that everything was ok.
2. One of my old flatmates from Newcastle then contacted me saying a letter had arrived saying that my account was in arrears. As far as I was concerned up until then - I had successfully cancelled my membership as Gymetc hadn't come back to me.
3. I contacted Harlands Group to explain what had happened and that I was disputing the money. They said they needed proof that I was moving to Vietnam - so I provided my documentation that showed I was moving to Vietnam.
4. They said they accepted the proof but I was still in arrears of £50 - I had no money in my UK account at this time as I had exchanged all my money to Vietnamese Dong.
I then didn't hear anything back from them via email and moved to Vietnam and forgot about it if I'm honest. My parents then received a letter at their home address (I am not sure how they got this address) saying that I now owe £444.
My mum is worrying that this will have an effect on her credit score. Any advice would be great - thanks so much!

Hi,
Debt is associated with the named person, ie, you, it is not linked to particular addresses, and will have no effect on anyone else's credit file but yours, and no one else can be made responsible for paying it.
You should always cancel things in writing, an email is not a recommended method, as they can go to spam filters, get lost, and have no actual meaning in legal terms.

Yeah, I've realised now that that was a mistake. I should have cancelled the gym membership properly, but I had so many things to sort out with moving to another country, I hadn't really thought too much about it.
Where do you think I stand on paying the fees. I really don't have that money right now. I need to call them, but having a few issues with adding money to my skype account right now due to being hacked. I have sent them an email just to let them know that, and I will call as soon as my Skype is back up and running.
Thanks for your help!0 -

Are you still in Vietnam or back in the uk ?
If your still abroad, and intend to stay there, you could either forget about it, but Risk further hassle for your parents, for example, they could take you to court and get a judgement against you, they may attempt to trace you at last known address, and that could cause issues with bayliffs etc etc, they could not enforce against your parents house but would cause problems sorting it out.
Or make an arrangement to pay, after first challenging the amount they say you owe, as it should be possible to get it reduced with negotiation.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. How did they say this? If by letter and you have a copy, then is that proof (from their own mouth) that your final debt to them is £50 not £444 ?0 -
I'm still in Vietnam, but don't want to cause any more hassle for my parents. So I will try and make an arrangement with them, hopefully they can reduce the fees down!
Thanks again!0 -
This was via email - but they did also say that in order to fully cancel I had to pay the £50 or more charges would be added on top of this.
I'm going to ask them for a breakdown of all the charges that made it to £444 from £50 as it seems ridiculous.
They said they have passed the debt from Harlands to CRS. But it seems that they are part of the same company so the fees to passover should not be that high!0 -
Charges are supposed to be reasonable.
Ask for a breakdown then complain they are unreasonable.:beer:0
