I'm most likely going 290X as well - figure it'll last me a wee while or at the very least give Football Manager a decent length of time to work on it the way it did in this machine! (All the years of playing stuff like Crysis, Starcraft 2 etc it was FM2011 that killed my graphics card - I'm naturally suspicious of it still!)Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0

Haha! I missed out FM2011 so I avoided whatever graphics-card murdering fiendishness it was up to!
If you do go 290X, if you're not already aware, go for one with a custom cooler fitted. I went for a Sapphire one myself (because I'm cheap...). The AMD reference cards are actually designed to go up to 90+ degrees!
The Sapphire one I have max's out at about 72 degrees which is far less scary. I've heard good things about Asus variants as well.
AMD have started to release specs on the 3xx series cards now as well, so possibility the 2xx series will be seeing a price drop soon.0 -
Had heard the stock coolers on them were noisy & inefficient, was also why I'm planning on using a case with more fans than Madonna to maximise airflow. The prices on 2XX series have been consistently downward trending for a wee while now though, even before the latest round of news surrounding 3XX series was released. In the end there's always an element of luck when building, if you're lucky you get a component at a "good" price, if not you're paying full whack for it, just a case of keeping an eye.Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0
