    Hi Mummy George,

You should speak to your Official Receiver (OR) if you are worried and check the progress of things. But, please be aware that, if you only have a basic bank account then it may not be necessary for the OR to freeze it as you would only reopen a similar account.

There is some interesting information on this link that may also help you - https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/bankruptcy-what-will-happen-to-my-bank-account

Is this the account that you opened especially for your BR?

  • Hi, no they are old accounts which were listed in bankruptcy due to overdrafts.

OR's are, like all public sector staff, a bit short handed these days. It took about 9 weeks for all my creditors to get the info from the OR. The 'old' bank accounts were closed but no one got in touch to tell me - I tried to log on one day (out of curiosity - I wasn't using the account) and it just said the account was not available.
As for my new basic account - if they did freeze it I never noticed. I'd taken out enough cash on the BR date to last about 10 days so it wasn't ever a problem.
The OR won't contact you unless they want something - nothing to worry about. If you were specifically expecting something then just email the OR and ask.

My bank accounts didn't get closed until about 7 months after my BR. They will get to it eventually - unless they slip through the net!

    Hello again,

There have been some good points raised on this thread. I think it is also important to highlight that if you haven’t already got a basic bank account, then I would suggest you do this ASAP. Barclays are quite helpful in giving basic bank accounts to people in a bankrupt state, but you can always shop around. As long as you have a basic account for your income and essential living expenses it is very unlikely that the OR would freeze this type of account. It would also mean that when the OR does freeze the other accounts it should have no/ little impact on you.

    I hope that helps,
