Mortgage rejection- help!

Hi folks, would be great if I could get some advice.
My partner and I recently applied for a mortgage with Coventry Building Society and were declined. This is due to my poor credit score, my husbands credit score is excellent.
I had debts of around 6k and this is now paid off and I have registered myself on the electoral roll.
The last issue on my report was April last year and was for a late payment for £4 which I didn't know I had, annoying to say the least but this is being disputed.
My husband is now a contractor (he was not on when we applied a few months ago).
What can we do to get a good mortgage deal? Me with my bad credit score although my noodle report has showed an improvement going from a 1/5 to 3/5 in the past two months. I'm making sure I do not miss any payments over the next year and we would like to re-apply in December.
What are our chances of getting a mortgage? We will have a 20%-25% deposit.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Speak to a good broker.
Contractors and bad credit are 2 of the biggest reasons people speak to brokers and you have both to contend with.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it.
