I was in a large store yesterday afternoon and was queuing at the till, watching how many people picked up sweets, chocolates and single bottle drinks as they waited.
Sending their child to pick up family size bags of sweets on a nearby shelf.
Just shows how this trick gets shoppers to spend extra.

I always wait till I get home for a drink.

Or that these products are conveniently placed for those that want them.

I do see what your saying though!

Marketing, devised for the unwary shopper to grab the rest of their cash .A supermarket ploy that has earned them a few bob over the years.

Think about when you are walking out of the supermarket with maybe a toddler or two and a baby in the trolley the comics are placed at thier level and brightly coloured and usually the latest popular cartoon character that kids will spot and whine for

Or the fact that the basic stuff you want to buy is placed at the back of the store so you have to walk past all the tempting stuff first.

Rarely see Bread, Suga,r Milk etc by the front of the store. The cheapest stuff is never at eye level either Usually on the bottom shelf most expensive stuff at eyelevel to entice you to buy it

Supermarkets have plenty of 'good ideas ' men working to make sure that you part with as much cash as you can when you shop

Drives me mad, perfectly placed sweets for my three year old to spot every time we go to a till. So many parents must give in for an easy life as well. Dont get me wrong I allow him a treat from by the tills every now and again, but it should be my choice to allow him to have something not just because it has been shoved in his face.

I do applaud Lidl on their ban on unhealthy stuff by tills. They have seeds, nuts, dried fruit and herbal teas. I occasionally shove some things in the trolley when there but have found them to be much cheaper than other big stores and due to the long shelf life and us only eating seeded HM bread, these things always get used up!

Irritating it might be but I'm sure most of us on here aren't tempted by yet another marketing ploy. In true mse fashion we go with a list and only buy what's on there unless it's an absolute bargain (like YS stuff that can freeze).

It is a little harder with children in tow but I never felt the need to give in. Carrying drinks and/or snacks in my handbag saved a fortune or simply letting the child have something from the shopping (after you've paid of course!;)).

I have trained my eyes to have a good look around the shelves. Bottom row and top. Reduced area's. I like to shop on my own with a list and use any coupons I have.

Yesterday, I was in the Range and watching folk as I queued at the till. The store was doing a good trade.

I am not at all bothered about what other people put in their trolley or basket. My only concern is not to be tempted into impulse buys. Must be difficult for parents and children though, but if they included little ones in discussions on household budgeting, and the kids were shown what they can afford and what not, it would be a good lesson to teach them.

  • Supermarkets are sneaky blighters in their lay outs especially reference young children.

I think by design they put an awful lot of pressure on parents, by putting expensive treats, like cheese strings, dunkers etc, at child height. Years back I used to only ever shop when little un was at school, as the hopeful look they give you whilst clutching an expensive character treat can be difficult to say no to.

Lets face it, kids would want a bag of gravel if it had the latest 'character' on it.

  • It's annoying when you go in to W Smiths and on reaching the till you're asked if you would like any of the promotional chocolates. Can't even get away from it at the self scan as that asks you too!!!
