Liable for £5k tax? Please help!

The Inland Revenue are chasing my boyfriend for £5000 they say he owes them in tax. He was employed by a company for 10 years, and we suspect they didn't calculate his tax correctly when paying him. The company he was employed by no longer exists. Does anybody know what our position on this is? Is my boyfriend liable to pay the £5k?
Titch :)

The inland revenue should explain to you in detail how they have calculated this liability. Make sure they have their facts right first and get a qualified accountant to help if necessary.

You can probably negotiate a repayment plan as well, coming at your with a £5,000 bill doesn't seem very fair but it depends what it is for.
