Why did csa stop and will it start again with an apprenticeship?

My step daughter is 18. My husband paid csa until she was 17 then we got a phone call out of the blue from csa to say that his case had been closed. Her mother nor my step daughter said anything about this. Not even sure why it stopped. My step daughter isn't always good with the truth so it's hard to know what is true but she tells us she is on a level 1 course at college in child care and then last week said she was starting an apprentice.

Does this mean csa will start up again? Or would it have carried on if she was on a level 1 course in college? We have little contact with Her mum so not sure if it stopped due to her circumstances either. We have one child and are expecting another. We didn't tell csa about our first child as my husband was happy with what he was paying but now we really can't afford to start payments again.

Any ideas if level 1 college courses are the reason it stopped before and if an apprenticeship could start csa up again? Her mum would want us to pay but I'm wondering if she would try and get benefits before hassling us.

Have you had the notice in writing? If not then assume the case is still open.

Yes we had notice csa was closed and they refunded what husband had paid over too. This was about 18 months ago

The mother can open another case if she wanted to so yes, payments could start up again and your husband would have to pay.

Without wishing to sound rude, but with the little one on the way he will have 3 children - he (or you!) cant just decide that one can no longer be afforded. The payments will be based on your current circumstances so a small discount for his 2 new children will be applied should the PWC open a case.

I don't believe that apprenticeship qualifies for CSA payments

You are wrong, some apprenticeships are eligible for Child benefit and therefore eligible for child maintenance.

Having two children of your own makes a much bigger difference to the amount you are liable to pay the CSA than the calculation based on one child - at least that was the case on CSA1 anyway. As far as apprenticeships go, if Child Benefit is payable then CSA is also payable, as Shoe Diva says, we had to pay CSA for a child that was getting paid in their own right on an apprenticeship scheme.
