bank account after bankruptcy

hi,
my husband was discharged from bankruptcy in December 2014, however he needs a bank account. I note Barclays offer a basic account, the problem is Barclaycard were some of the debts that went through the bankruptcy. I Barclays do open an account for him would they be able to claim the debt back that he owed and that went into the bankruptcy ?
also he would like to start saving, are there any savings accounts for discharged bankrupts ?
it has been a traumatic 3 years on a DMP then going forward to bankruptcy, my husband had a breakdown and wanted to walk off the planet. now he is discharged he wants to never get into debt again ( debt was caused after he had an accident that stopped him working for 12 months and he was self employed)
so a basic bank account and a savings account seems the way forward.
any advice on banks and building societies for discharged bankrupt is greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Sounds like it has been a difficult few years for you both; I hope you feel that the bankruptcy is now allowing you and your husband to envisage a fresh start.
Barclays would absolutely not be able to recoup any debt from your husband's bankruptcy in the event of him opening a new basic account with them. My understanding is that an earlier debt like the one you mention here should not prevent him from opening this, subject to passing the standard ID and anti-money laundering checks.
I can't really comment on savings accounts as that's more of a financial advice issue, but he could start by asking at Barclays if and when the basic account is opened.
Kind regards
Dennis

Barclays have a savings account too. Once you open the basic bank account, you can also open an "everyday saver" account.0

Barclays will open a basic account for him and it is safe from any claw back - it would actually be illegal for Barclays to try that. The Co-op is also BR tolerant and now he is discharged will open a cashminder account for him. Almost all other High St banks are unlikely to accept him. I also think is it possible (but different posters have different experiences) that Barlcays will not open a savings account but Yorkshire Building Society do an online saver and seem happy to have BR's
With Barclays and the co-op - don't apply on line, make an appointment to open an account in branch and explain the circumstances if necessary.
Another option open to everyone including BR's is a credit union - google it and see if there is one near you.0
