Finding those all important reference numbers!

Hi everyone, we are in the process of trying to clear up our credit files, there are still a few things showing that shouldn't be so we are writing to the creditors (we should have done this absolutely ages ago).

We no longer have any of the paperwork from our BR, I guess kind of stupidly we shredded it all because we wanted to put that part of our lives firmly behind us - however now, of course, we need the account numbers etc. for a handful of the creditors that were included in the BR. What is the best way to get hold of these if we don't have the paperwork? I have written to the OR and they have provided a few but they say there are a couple (e.g. a car finance entry) that they don't hold details for.

Thanks for reading :)

Obtain your Statutory Reports from all three credit reference agencies.

These will show accounts, and also, dates of default....and if they are incorrect.
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......
  • The reports don't show the reference number in full, they show a number of X's and then the last four digits (eg. XXXXXXXXXXX2024). I have the reports from Experian and Equifax and this is the case (it is these reports I am using to assess the status of each record).

I was wondering if I should contact the creditor, or do I just need to buy a copy of my BR certificate, I'd rather avoid the latter if possible to save costs.

You just need to give enough information for the creditor to be able to uniquely identify the account. Obviously an account/ref number is the easiest, but not essential if you can other info.

I would also screenshot/scan the credit file entry and send with any letter.

The OR will give or email a letter confirming discharge if you need it.
email their request to discharge.queries@insolvency.gsi.gov.uk . Please ask the enquirer to provide details of their full name, date of birth, current and previous address, national insurance number and court reference number. If the enquirer does not have access to email they should be advised to call the IEL on 0845 6029848 (callers should select option 3 followed by option 5).

  • Thanks fermi. So am I correct in thinking that I don't have to provide a copy of the BR order? I already have a copy of a discharge letter from the OR and am enclosing that.

So if I send the letter and confirm the date I went BR (I am using the templates provided in the sticky), with a copy of the entry on the credit file, plus a copy of the discharge certificate, will that be enough for them to make the amendments?
