Small Business Ideas - Help

Hi
I'm looking to do some business research into a couple of business ideas that I have. I already work full time (although technically self employed) but I'd like to put some money into a couple of ideas I have and feel confident about.
The only issue is with the starting point? How do I carry out market research etc without getting in touch with competitors, who I presume wouldn't be too overwhelmed in supplying me any figures etc...
any pointers welcome
Thanks
Alex

That depends what you're planning on doing. Research what items will cost you and how much you can sell the items for or the going rates for the service you want to offer. If selling look at fees and postage costs to you. Research ways you can reach your target audience too.
Even if a company gave you their figures (which they won't) it might not be the same cost to you.0 -
if its something which doesnt require a lot of work to put a quote together, you could ask a quote as if you are a potential customer0

OK that's a good start thanks.
Basically I think I need to sit down and write out everything from materials products, to insurances, service costs and overheads?
That sounds pretty simple.
Are there any websites you'd recommend to get a good example of a business plan as a template?
