  • Nursemaggie I think your coat might have been made in China as they designate size 12/14 as extra large.....doesn't explain the length of the arms though?????

Yes MrsLW it was made in China and I would not have ordered it if I had known.

The sleeves are normal length but it is very short and very narrow thus small children. I had more of a vision of ET with the sleeves trailing on the ground.

Morning quick question to some of the older peeps. Do any of you use log splitters and if so what kind and how easy are they to use. Not being ageist as wanting to get for my mum who is in her 70's and not able to heft heavy things about. Any advice greatly appreciated xx

Shanks I know of 2 people that have electric log splitters, not particularly old, but they find them brilliant. Both say they were well worth the money.
  • We use what is called a 'log bomb' which is a hefty piece of metal with a wide top and pointed bottom with vanes radiating out that you whack into a big round of wood and it gradually splits the round if you leave it in and give it the occasional whack. He Who Knows usually whacks it with a 'club hammer' rather than a sledge hammer. You can hear the wood creak as it splits over a period of time. Green wood splits very easily as does very dry wood but if you have mid aged wood or wood with knots or side branches they are the devil of a job to split. He Who Knows is 72 and processes ALL our scrounged wood.

shanks What a kind idea for your Mum :A

ETA DS is starting the pipework for the new boiler today. He will get as much done as he can, then his gas engineer friends will come next weekend, finish any that still needs doing, and fit the new boiler. not too long to wait!

Had a prang in the car yesterday - we were sitting in a slow-moving queue of traffic when a car pulled out from a side road that's at an angle and crashed into the driver's door and front wing  He said he just didn't see us because of the traffic. I think he thought the car in front of us was the last one in the queue, though our car is red so easy to see! At any rate, no one was hurt and that's the important thing. Ours is a Motability car, so their insurers will deal with it. It will be collected for repair on Monday, and we'll have a courtesy car in the meantime. Hoping it will be one which OH can get in and out of easily!

We're fine thanks, though OH was more shaken than me as it was on his side so only a few inches away from him  He was creakier than usual the next day, but I hope he'll be all right today.

the courtesy car will be arranged through Enterprise, and they are sending someone to pick us up on Monday afternoon to go and see which of the ones available will be best for us. We don't know how long it'll be until we get the "proper" car back - we've only had it 10 months, so hopefully they won't decide it's a write-off, seems to be just bodywork. The door makes a horrible CRACK! CRACK! now when opened or closed, but at least the lock works :)

I had a shower when I got up today - had meant to have one last night, and OH was going to have a bath, but we were both too cold to face taking any clothes off :o:D but when I woke up I was toasty warm, so got on with it while the going was good. Thank goodness we have hot water at least :j and not too long now until we have the new boiler fitted. Might have a look for one of those "Heat and light" bulbs for the bathroom in the meantime, if they still exist.

ETA Oh good, they do! :) I'll wait until OH is up, and see if he wants to bother.
