Feedback on a dress shop website please

Hi all. I'm looking to buy a couple of nice evening gowns and came across this website: https://www.victoriasdress.co.uk
Now, I've never heard of them before, so I'm wondering if anyone on here have any experiences (good or bad) with them. I'm not that great at sussing out dodgy websites, so any help will be much appreciated.

On first impressions it seems like a good website, however, the billing address is in London, but the headquarters are in Hong Kong - obviously the dresses are being made there, which means that the quality is probably going to vary from what is shown on the picture.

A quick search for reviews shows three 5* reviews on trust pilot which to me look a bit suspicious - the style of writing seems odd. There is a website here saying that it is on their Do Not Buy list as they are a scam website.

And their website domain is owned by someone in Beijing

The site isnt compliant with UK law but all evidence suggests that it is a Chinese company that has just registered a .co.uk domain (anyone in the world can) and is using a mail forwarding address in London.

HCW Limited isnt a trading UK company, the last one to be named such went bust in 2009 but I believe Hong Kong also use Ltd for private companies due to their history with the UK and so its possible miss direction/ happy coincidence for them

Ultimately, there is a lot of good things that come out this neck of the woods but there can be certain issues too. Quality control, consumer rights and potentially import charges are all part of it.

If the prices are so cheap that you dont mind if its Primark quality and accept the risk that if there's something wrong with it that you'll be stuck with it then go for it. If its not that cheap or you cannot afford the risk then I personally would look elsewhere.

Thank you all for your help. I think I'll go elsewhere for dresses. I need them to be of good quality and looking proper, as I have some rather posh functions to attend. A cheap looking dress just won't be the done thing ;)

If you can afford to wait, Debenhams, John Lewis and House of Fraser do really good sales. I got a ballgown from HoF last year, should have been £200 but was half price, then needed another ballgown this year (too many pies...) and got one from Coast at John Lewis for £50, down from £140.

Thank you, Stir_crazy. I still have quite a bit of time, so will keep an eye out for sales. I'm just "panicking" slightly as I've never been to events like I'm going to before and want to get it right and fit in :)

If possible, have a look at photos at prior events to see what people are actually wearing.

For guys its simple as 99% are lounge suit or black tie, only ever known one white tie event (but it was strictly enforced with those in tuxs being refused entry)

For women there is a much much broader spectrum of what can be covered by "evening dress" from a little more than office dress with some taller heels and a clutch through cocktail dresses to full ball gowns.

The first one we went to in the Mrs wore a nice but fairly understated cocktail dress but she and an African lass were the only two not in black/ white

One of the functions is definitely long gown. I've seen some pictures and it looks frightfully posh :D

One of the others, I can possibly get away with a shorter dress I already have (knee length) and the third I have no clue yet. I'll keep researching :)
  • john lewis still has a sale on woman's clothes and have quite a few dresses on there - top right under special offers
Don't forget you can order to waitrose stores for collect too
