Wee Problem

Got a letter into my mothers address the other day from a company claiming on behalf of Clydesdale bank. This letter claims I owe them £180 which I didnt know I owed. I had an overdraft of £100 when I was younger so dont know how this balance could of got so high. I called Said bank and they said they dont have my account details anymore and I will have to contact the collections agency. So Will I have to pay the full balance as it must just be charge after charge. And can the charges be written off if there with a collections agency ?
Thanks for saying thanks

Is it likely that this debt is over 6 years old? If so, it is likely statute barred. This means that, provided you haven't had contact or acknowledged any debt in the past, you are not obliged to pay it.

They can still chase you, but they legally can't make you pay it.

Here is a letter you can send to them (if you wish, although most people ignore them as they generally give up) http://www.nationaldebtline.co.uk/england_wales/temp/7880_63661.pdf

If, as I believe from the OP's accent, he/she lives in Scotland, then it is only five years. If this is the case then the OP should use the following template letter:

Of course, if martin is in England or Wales then he should use the link that angela has provided.
Who is the Collection Agency? Perhaps we know them and can give more specific advice.
I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

Good point Rog - missed that one! Then the link I gave is indeed incorrect as its for England/Wales.
