Buildings Insurance etc

So I am about to move house in the coming weeks hopefully. First time I have experienced a "proper" move I would say. Only other time I moved was with my parents when I was younger (and actually missed it because I was in hospital) and when I purchased my current house (but that was a vacant property so did not technically move in to live there that day).

Will need to change everything over, going to be a nightmare I can imagine. Apparently I need to have Buildings Insurance in place on my new property at the point of exchanging contract, not at time of completion. I understand it is legally binding once contracts exchanged? Can I just contact my current home insurance provider and ask them to move it over on whatever date? Or will it not be that simple?

Also thinking shortly will have to call all the providers and give meter readings etc, then got to change tv license, cars, banks, car breakdown cover, everything. Really daunting. Wife is so laid back about all this but for me is constantly running through my mind what I need to do, lol. Stress! :wall:

Fortunately, a number of people have been through this process before you.

Just give your current insurance provider details of your new property and ask them to quote for buildings (and contents insurance) on the new place.

You cannot 'swop' it over as you need the insurance on the new property from date of exchange (when you are legally committed to buy) and the old place until date of sale.

BTW - you must be driving your wife mad! Calm down.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, think I am driving her mad.

Just been in contact with current home insurer. Apparently they can give me a quote but I cannot take it out until contracts are exchanged. I believe I need the policy in place at time of exchanging contracts so what can I do?

Looks like need to go to other companies. Just phoned a different number and got a quote. And they can have the policy in place prior to exchange - strange.

    Usual poor communication from insurers.
