Retro Collecting

Does anyone collect retro games and consoles here?

I've been looking at Cash Converters where I got a few good things from in the past. A new mint Game Cube if I remember right and special edition.

I've been wondering round the site today and noticed loads of boxed SNES games, all in the one store (Acton). Then it got me thinking, that's normally rare to find loads in one go in one stored, boxed. So either someone needed the money and sold their small collection or they are stolen. How would you go about checking? They are all overpriced anyway, much like all the other Cash Converter type stores (yet I bet they only paid £5 for each box). But curious how good their checks our on stolen goods.

There really wouldn't be any specific way that you could check whether a retro lot is stolen or not. There are some sellers out there who mark their items with a UV pen to safeguard against buyers who receive items, say they are not as described, and then send back different items. But that would only be a minority of people. In the absence of something like that I can't think of how you would check if retro games were stolen. Then again it's not necessarily the case that they are stolen; some people are just genuinely ignorant of the value of them.

I think I'd have to call myself a collector at this stage. Things started out a few years ago with me just picking up some old consoles that I'd played when I was younger for the nostalgia, but bit by bit the collection has grown and is now quite a decent size. Prices have gotten a bit silly in the past year or so for certain consoles, though you could just flip that on its head and say that it shows that retro gaming is a good investment. That said, the value of my collection isn't really very important to me at all. I collect for the pleasure of owning them, not to make a profit.

i've only recently got into collection retro games , i bought a console called a super retro trio ( it plays NES , SNES , Megadrive games ) and since i got it last october i have bought around 20 games off ebay

i have visited a few carboots as well and now own the following

    NES
    Sega megadrive 1
    Sega master system 2
    Original playstation
    Original XBOX
    Original Gameboy

    all picked up pretty cheaply

some of the pices for retro games on ebay can be high if you want them boxed with instructions but loose carts can be picked up quiet reasonably

And watch out for the sealed games. I watch MetalJesusRocks on YouTube who has Reggie on now and then, who opens sealed games. He recently done a recent opening sealed game videos because one of the collectors he knew, open old ones he had. They ended up having no discs in them. They were fake reseals.

The only console I ever bought was a SNES, which I've still got but never bought many games for it.

Then I won a 360 a few years back, and someone gave me a PS2.

So I keep a lookout in charity shops etc for 'good' original Xbox and PS2 games, and I've built up a reasonable collection, but wouldn't consider myself a collector as such.
    Out on blue six..

    1 playstation 3

You'd have to be a pretty serious collector to go for older sealed games nowadays, as they can go for silly money. That said, there are certainly plenty of people out there who try to reseal games and sell them off as new. For the most part they are quite easy to spot, but if you are interested in sealed older games it pays to be vigilant.

I always look in charity shops for newer retro games, i.e. pc, xbox, gamecube, ps1 and 2 etc.

I second the pawn shops like cash converters (generally the local independant ones will have better prices), especially for the older stuff such as n64, megadrive as well as the newer stuff I find in charity shops. Although I have to be honest and say that they are a bit on the pricy side.

I also have a stall in a relativley local market (Grainger Market, Newcastle) stall that has older games. I got a snes for £30 there. I know there is also a really good one in the Eagle Market in Derby.

Also worth looking out for is the increasingly rare indie game store - they are a usually a treasure trove of older games as well as having new titles in too.

I miss gamestation so much as thats where the bulk of my collection came from - super metroid (I think it was boxed too!) and super mario all stars (BOGOFF) for £10 and an n64 with 8 games for £30. I knew all the staff by name and they kept an eye out for stuff for me - this can apply to any shop really though

My final suggestion for searching would be on ebay can still be the best place to get some good deals. Look for sellers who are not game stalls that deal in retro gaming (less likely to know the value of a game), miss-spells and bulk sales to get the best bargains as well as looking at the newly listed buy nows.

As for my collection (its packed up as moving house) I *think* it consists of
    - NES (with about 10 games)
    - Megadrive (with about 30 games)
    - SNES (with an impressive 2 games!)
    - N64 (with 10ish games)
    - PSX (with about 20 games)
    - Gameboy Colour (in a very 2000s lime green! with about 10 games)
    - PSOne
    - PS2 (with maybe 20 games)
    - Gamecube (with about 15 games)
    - GBA SP Classic NES edition
    - Xbox (with a handful of games)
    - PS2 slim
    - Wii (with maybe 15 games)
    - Xbox 360 (with close to 50 games!!)
    - My PC is from 2005 - that counts right?!... (with nearly 100 games - the newest being elder scrolls 4)
    - 3DS XL (with 4 3ds games, a dozen or so DS games)

I'm sure I'm missing some things out too...

I've had loads of retro consoles but sold everything except my Megadrive 2 collection as there's quite a few games worth a fair bit in the collection and I don't really fancy parting with it all (just yet!)

The only thing I'll say you get with a lot of the Facebook groups is morons who will (very strongly) disagree with your valuation of your items and scream from the rooftops that you're trying to rip people off no matter how many times you prove to them that the items you're selling are what people are actully paying for them at the moment. It's the same people on every selling post usually. Oh, and be prepared to haggle with morons over postage too. I had a fall-out with someone who said I was a con-merchant because I was sending something for 20p more than he cost of 1st class postage. He still argued after I pointed out that the 20p extra didn't even cover the cost of the materials I was wrapping the item up in. You'll find these groups often have a core of idiots who think they should pay a fraction of what the items are worth and if you don't then you're a scammer... Needless to say I'm unlikely to be selling anything else on certain groups on Facebook! I just can't deal with the idiot-factor relating to some of them.
  • I used to have an intellivision but when I had it it wasn't retro.
Nothing to see here, move along.
