For fear of sounding like an advert... I used Ariel (biological) on a long hot wash. We'd use T-cut, got it on clothes, left in machine a tad too long and thus a stinky machine. Googled it and found a plumbing site of some sort which referred to this. So grab a box of Ariel to freshen up the machine. Mine is getting a bit stale so is probably due this. Best of luck.

  • Getcarter, Hi:hello:. I do know exactly how you feel, this is quite a regular occurrence with my hubby. I would say follow the advice above, i.e. do a very hot wash with the ariel powder, but I always make sure that I give the rubber seal around the inside of the machine a good wipe over with the neat powder, because this is the main part of the machine that will hold the smell. Good Luck.
P.S I know it's not really money saving, but it is old style, when my automatic machine broke down lastb year, I bought an old 2nd hand twin tub, it's great on a nice sunny day, I get it out, start from the lightest to the darkest colours, then put hubby's really grubby stuff or the door mats in for a good hot wash, and it never holds the smell.

this use to happen all the time with my oh - best one was when he somehow sprayed himself head to foot with it. very hot wash with any soap powder and a pre wash, it may take a couple of washes to get rid of it

Diesel is a type of oil so is inherently greasy. You need to use something that breaks down grease and oil.

Bleach and vinegar will have no effect on oil/diesel.

Cleaning out the filter and running hot washes with washing up liquid and Bio detergents will be your only solution.

Stop the machine before it does the cold rinse cycles as well - just a few hot was cycles will sort your problem out.

Bleach and vinegar will not dissolve oils, so no point in using them.

My ex is a mechanic.., days when he didn't come home smelling of diesel were rare.

When I had my previous washing machine, it was quite difficult to get rid of the smell.., had better luck with ariel actilift .., but also tried adding soda crystals. Washed twice at 95 degrees would get rid of most of the smell. But this was a 2half hour wash cycle.., each cycle. Bit ridiculous lol. We did split up, but there has been the odd occasion when I've still done the washing (I do mean odd occasion lol).

Then I got a new washing machine. My goodness, my samsung gets rid of the smell to the same level (faint odour) with one 60% wash and it only takes just over an hour. Life saver. I don't even buy ariel anymore, just a normal liquid biological washing solution from Aldi. Reckon I'll have saved the cost of the machine within a year due to energy and washing powder savings.

Febreeze is just a masking agent, doesn't actually get rid of the smell. Vinegar does help too.
