Glasses - Online or High Street?

Where do you buy your glasses from?

I have always gone to the high street and had my eyes tested, then just bought some from the range in store but it has recently been suggested I go online to spex4less.com where I can input my prescription details and they'll send them out in the post.

Your views, as ever, are very much valued :)

If you can read this that is ;)

  • Does anyone know of an optician that will fit lenses in your own frames. I have heard that Asda may do this. I have just had my eyes tested at Boots. The Rayban frames that I wanted were £230. I have just found the same frames online for £75.

Specsavers and others will re-glaze .

I once wanted my little used frames re-glazed but the Specsavers charge was almost that for the cheapest range of frame, including lenses.

As they are a franchise, policy is decided by the individual, but, as they fit the lenses in the onsite lab, I was able to buy cheap frames (the condition being that the lenses were larger than those required for my frames) and have the lenses put in my frames.

I buy my glasses online, I have done since working for Glasses Direct a few years ago, I have used them and other places and found I get amazing value for money!

Most online places will reglaze as well, I know GD do.

The only issue with some online places is that they won't cater to prescriptions outside -4.0 to +4.0 in the SPH or CYL fields, while some will simply charge a little more. If you are inside these numbers then this isn't a concern but my CYL (which measures your astigmatism and might be blank if you don't have one) is edging closer and closer to -4.0

When I get prescription glasses/sunglasses in the opticians they take a lot of time and trouble in making sure they fit correctly. How can a mail order firm do that?

They don't - but if you've only paid £10 for them you may be more willing to bend things yourself.
