I'm sick of running into the same rocks over and over again

Every single year I seem to get myself into a panicky situation where I'm really, really short of cash - like borrowing £400 from my brother to cover the mortgage and leccy - but then I get a little Christmas money, a little work bonus, a little overpayment repayed from the power people, and I get my head back above water again. But I never manage to KEEP it that way and my CCs are both currently maxed out at terrifyingly large sums. Help? Please?


Notes on the below: I've been tracking my spending since October, but I've got all my hobbies, travel, haircuts, etc under the same tag, so all that money is under "hobbies"
my phone, internet and TV are all under phone and I'm locked into that contract for another year.

Well, assuming all this is entirely accurate (big if), then you are falling into debt at the rate of nearly £400 a month, or almost £5000 per year. Clearly, this cannot continue.

Essentially, you have to decrease your outgoings or increase your income. Just a glance tells me that a vast amount of money is being spent on food (£350) and although you have lumped things into 'hobbies', you are still apparently buying £70 worth of clothes a month. There is no way an adult needs £840 of new clothes each and every year!

What is 'factor' at £20 per month? Get rid of it unless it is essential to life. In fact, unless it is keeping a roof over your head or putting food in your belly, it needs to stop right now. You credit card payments are £270 a month, you dont say whether this is merely minimum payments of an actual overpayment/repayment situation, but this is money you dont have. It is a bona fide hair on fire emergency that you need to deal with right now!

I think you should redo your SOA and split out those 'miscellaneous' categories into their correct values. Dealing with denial is undoubtedly step one on the journey. Hiding your debts from yourself is pointless and as you have discovered, leads to financial instability. Unless you are utterly certain, down to the penny, how money is spent, you will get precisely nowhere, I guarantee you. You need a real plan with real figures and they need to be utterly accurate.

Once you have that, you take an axe to it. You cut everything that can be cut by at least half. If it isnt essential for life, it goes. I'm sorry, but that is the hard reality of your situation right now. You are living a lifestyle you cannot afford. Sooner or later, it is all going to come home to roost.

yes you need to do a comprehensive SOA. Use the one at stoozer and paste it here with the stuff broken down.

However the bad news is things will have to change. You do not have enough to live on yet are spending £180 on eating out??? Nope. Same with birthdays and groceries and your hobbies. Sorry theres no sugar coating or magic solution but even a quick glance tells me that you can get your way out of this so don't despair.
