but all you have to do is click on view wireless networks on your laptop and you can see which networks are free (it says unsecured next to them)

True, this isn't new technology or anything, but this gadget will run continuously without any faffing about and it's quite fast. When it finds a free connection it just connects. It shows you all the connections visually on a 'radar'. Otherwise you have to refresh the list manually, search through, find a strong signal with unsecured next to it, try the connection, search again if it doesn't work, try another one. Which gets really tiring with the MS internet connection wizard. I haven't tried other software, but this fits the bill for me.

Bit of a grey area here ethically and legally. Personally, my wireless is left unsecured as a way of saying 'use it if you want to'. I figure if you don't want others to connect then just enable the WEP key which is often enabled by default.

it's not a grey area legally. It's a specific offence for which the first successful prosecutions have already taken place. IIRC it was a guy sitting in his car in Northwood who used his laptop to browse the internet using a wireless network from a nearby house which wasn't security enabled. After suspicious neighbours saw him always parking in the same place they called the police and so his tale unfolded.
Whether to security enable a network in the first place is of course a different discussion.

i saw this on the real hustle on bbc 3 a while back. i don't think it's right to use other people's internet connection without their permission. hopefully it will be more in the press and househlders will see whats going on.

If you use someone elses Internet connection aka wifi without the owners permission, it is ILLEGAL and you will end up in jail.

A man has been arrested in connection with using a wi-fi broadband connection without permission.
He was initially detained by two Police Community Support Officers in Chiswick, west London, on Tuesday.
They became suspicious when they saw the 39-year-old using his laptop outside a house in Prebend Gardens.
When questioned he admitted to using someone else's unsecured wi-fi broadband connection.
The case is now being handled by the Metropolitan Police's computer crime unit.
Det Con Mark Roberts said: "This arrest should act as a warning to anyone who thinks it is acceptable to illegally use other people's broadband connections."
Dishonestly obtaining free internet access is an offence under the Communications Act 2003 and a potential breach of the Computer Misuse Act.
