Nightmares...

Options
Hi Everyone,

As my signature proudly declares, I became debt free at the beginning of the year. Since then though, I've been having nightmares...what if I've missed a debt?

Since I got into debt, my circumstances have seen me move house three times, so if there was anything that I missed it's unlikely anyone will have my current address to try and find me.

Some reassurance is that I've had the same mobile number throughout and I don't get debt-related calls any more.

Still I get these nightmares that I'm just about to apply for a mortgage (hoping to in the next 2-3 years) and suddenly someone pulls out a new default that sets me back another 6 years.

Has anyone else had this kind of thing?

  • Hi

That's a situation that you need to sort out - have you accessed your credit report to check that there is nothing else to pay?

I have, I check noddle every month and a week or so ago I checked my Equifax statutory. Everything on there is what I expected. Plenty of green spots. All debt accounts closed except overdraft account which is paid off, I've just not bothered to ring it up and close it yet.

I've always been a worrier. Had loads of anxiety problems before getting into debt, had to see mental health advisers and psychologists etc while I was at uni, years before I even got my first credit card.

It was certainly a nerve-wracking experience 4 months ago when I applied for a hefty 5x salary mortgage with a high-street lender (who I had previously defaulted with - or part of the same group anyway) - but to the great credit of my broker, we were approved and for a leading fixed rate.

Thanks Westminster, great to hear a success story of someone getting a mortgage after a default. Do you mind me asking, how long was it between your default and your mortgage app?

I'm definitely going to use an independent broker when I'm looking for quotes/applying, but it's interesting to see that you were approved by a group you'd defaulted with! Good work!

All my defaults had fallen off due to the 6 year rule - however, one of my creditors never defaulted (despite exhausting the usual complaints / ICO / FOS route) and the AP markers will remain visible until next January.

    Hi Kirsty

    Firstly, congrats on becoming debt-free!

Secondly, remember that mortgage lenders won't see anything on your credit report that you can't see yourself.

I would suggest that you get copies of your report from Experian and Callcredit as well, as not all lenders report data to each of the three credit agencies.

Actually, as you've been checking your Noddle report regularly, your whereabouts ought to be perfectly visible to any creditors you might still have had. You will have been linked to previous addresses and therefore will have left a set of "footprints" behind you. Despite this, you're not getting any letters, which suggests you haven't missed any debts out.

Good luck with your deposit saving.
