I would be turning this round and asking yourself a few questions.

From what you have written you clearly feel that you have been treated differently to other workers and are not being given the holidays you want because the manager is being uncooperative about it. Others are being given holidays whenever they like and your are being deliberately blocked.

    Why would that be true?

To be honest if it was me I would be fuming with my partner for being so ridiculous as to book and pay for a holiday before he knew it was possible for me to get the time off.

If you and your partner have been working for 40 years then I don't believe for a minute that it wouldn't cross your partners mind that you may not be given the dates you are requesting.

I know how my company works and how my partners company works but if I wanted to book a holiday taking my son or daughter away I would not just assume that their companies would work the same way.

At our company its a percentage of employees within the company that are allowed off at one time despite the fact that they may all be in different areas of work. Also to get cover with seasonal workers cost them more per hour as they pay the agency fees on top.

Your anger is directed at the wrong person here.

    You are missing something.

you outlined the issue go a variety of replies.

most(all?) confirmed that the issues needs be sorted with your management they can determine your holidays so very unlikely there is any legal recourse you can use to get them to change their mind

even if everyone had said what you wanted to hear, you manager is wrong they should let you have this holiday booking immediately, nothing would be any different.

The multiple rants and repeats of the same information on here will not influence your management in any way.

    negotiate, union/grievance, resign or retire.
  • Just my two pence worth. I'm also in retail (from your descriptions it's a similar company but probably not the same one). I know that in my company they have a budget for labour costs every month including holidays and only a certain number of people can be off at any one time - this is across the whole store, not just individual departments. There is also a budget to cover unpaid leave and it's quite limited. That budget is there for people who might need to take additional leave in exceptional circumstances e.g. following a bereavement, if they need longer than the compassionate leave allowance - what if there was nothing left in the budget for colleagues in such a situation because it had been used by people wanting to take an unpaid holiday?

I do understand your frustration when you've changed previous holiday dates to accommodate your colleagues but part of the issue may be that your line manager knows that some of your colleagues are not as flexible as you've been. I've had to be much tighter this year with how many people can be off on my department at any one time because I know that there are several people who won't step up and cover other people's holidays by doing overtime or being flexible with shifts yet they expect others to do it for them. This might be why they've said that if you can get agreement from others to cover it then they might reconsider - trying to cover shifts when you don't have enough (willing) colleagues is a huge headache. You've probably worked in situations where your team/store is understaffed and how stressful/pressurised it can be. Although it sounds unfair to you, this is what your management team will be trying to avoid.
