Smart Meter with solar systems (OVO)

I have searches the forum and Googled but have not been able to answer the following questions.

I have been offered a Smart Meter by OVO. It appears that it is optional and that I may accept or remain silent. The meter is accompanied by an in house handheld device.

The link OVOs FAQ does not appear to lead to the correct page.

Questions:

[1] Can the subscriber read export and invoice separately on the Smart Meter or on the handheld device ?

[2] Does the pulse flashing LED on the meter indicate import power only or does it indicate import power minus export power?

[3] Is there any value to the solar-powered household in accepting the retrofit?

Here's my understanding from what I have read and heard about "smart" meters.

[1] They don't measure export. They could do so, but the electricity suppliers don't care what you're exporting, so can't be bothered paying extra to have the meters re-programmed.

    [2] See [1].

[3] Is there any point in smart meters at all? I'm not convinced they are worth the cost of installing them.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Thank you, Ectophile, for your answers. This is rather what I surmised. Although I am by no means opposed to smart metering, I think that I will leave them for the time being since I think it is rather too early to get locked in to a meter that does not support solar.
