  • I used Harpic toilet cleaner to clean out my sink. Squirted it on and left it overnight.

unfortunately p&p is £3.99 or free if you spend over £25, it's easy to spend that much though! I have ordered from them a few times, a lot of the household things have been in Kleeneeze(?) packaging when they arrived.

If you place a bucket or basin underneath and unscrew the U shaped pipe at the bottom (It unscrews by hand), you can clear anything out of that pipe and also stick an implement up the pipe to the plughole to clear anything that might be obstructing.

When you're replacing it make sure you put the little black rubber washers back in, then pour lots of water down the sink to check you've re-fitted it properly. Check for drips.
Thanks for this post, you've given me the confidence to do this myself tomorrow :)

Btw the back washers you refer to are rings that cushion the thread joints?

That's very similar to what I have and was trying to describe.

My plugholes are bleached, soda crystalled on a weekly basis. Yeah it really works and my plugholes are lovely and clean.... only problem is, its fetched the chrome off the plugholes. I'm annoyed about that.

That does concern me. The chrome has gone on the plughole of our old enamel bath. The sinks in the bathroom and kitchen are relatively new and I don't want to risk the chrome on those, especially as we have sold our house and I don't want to new owner to come in and see all the chrome stripped off. I've noticed that already the taps have a few areas where some of the chrome coating is starting to crack. Thankfully it's underneath and isn't noticeable.

If its any help I think it was the bleach that did the damage rather than the soda crystals.

The problem I found with the sink snakes is that if it's really grotty/hairy (I have long hair - down to my bum), the velcro pads have very nearly come unstuck themselves, which would presumably worsen a blockage because you'd get more hair sticking to that. Works well, but use with caution!
