Pension Payments

Hi

I'm managing the estate and affairs for an elderly relative and trying to work out if the Dept Work & Pension state pension is paid in advance or arrears. Have not been able to get a clear reply from DWP.

My relative died on the same day as her pension was paid into her bank, hence me needing clarification.

Thanks in advance.

State pension, if paid weekly is paid in advance if started before 6 April 2010.

Until five years ago, weekly payments of State Pension were always in advance (4- or 13 weeks payments were in arrears). Anyone who was on weekly in advance before April 2010 can continue to get paid like this.

The change five years ago was to abolish weekly payments, with only 4- or 13 weeks in arrears. But then, as a concession, people can ask for weekly payments, but that will be in arrears.

If your relative died on the day payment was due, even if only one minute after midnight, s/he is entitled to the whole week's payment.
