How do you get to interviews when you work?

I've see people go home part way through the day with migraine/toothache/family issue/break in etc for interviews. Depends how good an actor you are0

If you take a sick day and then you were offered the job, be prepared for your manager asking when you went for the interview. You need a reference so you don't want to be caught out.Reggie_Rebel wrote: »Also be prepared for the prospective employer to ask how you got the time off for the interview
Seems to me like an impossible situation.
How does anyone source a new job under those circumstances?0 -
The fact of the matter is if you want the job you have to attend an interview and you have to what is best for you...sod loyalty to any company in this instance!
It is always easier to get a job whilst in a job (long term unemployment is a right turn off and only hinders your chances of success).
Unfortunately there are some companies who may make life more difficult and do not like it when employees up and leave as it means they have to re-employ and train somebody up but any employer with a brain would seek to try and change their mind, and they won't do that by being awkward!
I would say if you suspect this is likely then have no qualms to pull that sickie....think of yourself.0 -
The interviewers offered to move it to the next day but that's no good if we are understaffed then as well. The only difference is instead of 1 member of staff travelling to a course she will be on the course!
They can't move if beyond that week as the standard notice for someone in this position is 6 weeks and they want the new person DBS checked, referenced and in work by the start of April.
I'm glad I never mentioned anything to my manager yesterday as someone else asked for a half day for a medical appointment that week and got their face torn off. I'm just going to call in and tell them my medical condition has flared and i need the morning to recuperate.
It's highly unlikely that a similar job would be available any time soon so I really don't want to pass it up.
If my boss asked me when I had the interview id lie and say today as that's me day off for this week and it wouldn't be unusual to hear back from an interview a couple of days later and then take a day or 2 to consider it. Add in a day where I'm ill and in bed and it's not unreasonable id think.
If the interviewer asked how I got today off for interview id be very confused. I asked my OH who does interviews and he said this organisation would never ask that as it may bias the panel. They apparently can only discuss the content of the personal statement.0 -

If you get an offer in a day or a few day you just say you went after work a week before.0 -
Hi OP, how did this pan out?
Sorry to drag up your thread, but I have another situation coming up it to involves being short staffed so I am wondering do I should risk losing my income! (I think someone will complain) just to go to an interview!
Realised the problem with where I am is they will accept time off at short notice as long as full staffed, I've seen them be most funny over people being 'late' lately! so I actually don't know if it is actually more appropriate now taking a day sick, aargh
Thanks, would like to know how you got on0 -

You have to be loyal to the company you are working for not the one you want to work for as they will think 'oh right they called in sick, I wonder if they do that often'!
Again I do not call in sick if I can truly help it, although there maybe a first time
it may also have escaped your attention I am actually a Temp on 24 HOURS NOTICE and so your attempted berating of me is quite contradictive going by a further post on this thread
If I do leave or lose the work even then I will let you have the company details since you have been out of work so long it has made you bitter, they take anyone on - you can then take up the opportunity as your always saying how you will take any nmw job... Alright 'Charlotte'0 -

Thanks but it was a proper half day assessment as part of a group, on the day my timesheet was also due for signing so I'd have lost a full days work plus delayed payment for the weeks wages for getting the timesheet in late
Couldn't re-approach as it looked bad - they would question rightly so where my commitments lay? hit both sides, strikes me you can be the rejected candidate being reconsidered but not the interview decliner
My next interview coming up has re-adjusted the time so I know now it can be done, just hope it doesn't go against me with both parties eh, though I is hoping an interview dead on 9am means I stand every fighting chance of getting there0 -
I have recently applied for a permanent job with an agency and have been given an interview date for next week at 12.00 Midday. I requested an interview either first thing or after work hours. This is the worst possible time for me to be interviewed and I have emphasised that to go I would have to pull a sickie or forfeit a days holiday. Either way as a temp I will lose a days salary of £70.00 which I am not prepared to do. The agency say it is the only time I can be interviewed. I have called the agencies bluff and stated I need an alternative time and will see what happens.0
