selling gold from abroad not sure if hallmarked

hi, i have had a read of the threads on here about selling gold and i have some yellow 24ct gold items that i would like to sell or trade for something that is more to my taste.
i received the items around 35 years ago and they have never been worn and are not to my taste at all but on looking for hallmarks on them i can see marks but cant work out what they are - should be 999 for 24ct gold. from reading the forums and online i see that it is illegal to sell unhallmarked jewellery so i am at a bit of a dead end.
the jewellery has come from malaysia from a relative of mine and i contacted a local jeweller to see if they would take them but no joy. according to the gold selling websites they are worth around £500 in scrap value but i would prefer to sell them to somewhere they wouldn't just be melted down.
i am in Scotland but am going to London next weekend so any suggestions of how to establish if the jewellery has proper hallmarks and where best to sell it would be appreciated. thanks

Unless they have high value as jewellery it won't be worth a jeweller sending them to an Assay Office to be assayed and hallmarked for resale as jewellery. Therefore the value would be scrap gold value.
However try visiting at least 3 jewellers in London's Hatton Garden jewellery district as that is where you are most likely to get paid any premium over the scrap value.

Hi
I have a white gold ring, but the only hallmark is on the outside. It looks like a flat ant. (Six legs, two antennae) Can anyone help please?!!

If you look on Google images for hallmark images there are documents with pages of diagrams so you can identify and date your jewellery.
I eventually took mine to ramsdens after an independent jeweller wouldn't take it without a UK hallmark. After a lot of haggling I eventually got a good price. If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0 -

That is not a hallmark.
A hallmark must show the assay office and date in the prescribed form. Numbers or pictograms etc will not count as a UK hallmark.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
