We have no spare cash at all and have to find extra £500 per month already to get all bills paid . That is why we do students I can not do extra hours at work and neither can my husband

Ok - in that case make an agreement with each other that you will host students as often as possible as you NEED that money it no longer is a choice. If I were you I would explain the situation to your teenagers so that they are aware. You don't need to scare them but you can get them to understand that you need to host students for a while etc - possibly up to 2 years or more.

Can you post a statement of affairs so that people can see what your costs are?

If you are still finding it hard ot say no to your son, work out what you have to deny to your other two children because he's asking for money.
If your son is living with his father, or living by himself somewhere, he's old enough to support himself.
You are not his private bank.
Most people would ask for support, not money, so he's just trying it on rather than in genuine need.
    Good luck.

  • I do feel for you and your family - and its hard but tough love is what is required so stop giving him cash that you and your younger children need to survive with.

I personally wouldnt go down BR.

I too have interest only mortgage which runs out in a few years and my personal debt is approx £35k. My OH has roughly £25k.

My plan is to sell my house, release the equity to put lump sum down on a smaller property and pay off debts. Is this something you could consider?

I have changed jobs to increase hours to put towards bills and paying debts and take OT when it is going - can you go ft or change to a higher paying role? Not sure if you receive tax credits?

I have tried selling on ebay and i have found the Debt free wannabee challenges helpful and there are other forums that will inspire you and help you with ways of looking at raising money - the 1% challenge gives you 100 ways of paying your debts off in 1% chunks - very inspiring.

Do you have skills whereby you can make something, write and sell?

I know i sound like me, me, me but this is how i am approaching my debt and wanted to offer my support to you.

If you host students then thats what you have to do - well done. Im considering taking in a lodger. These things are temporary and will be reassessed.

There is light at the end of the tunnel and you will get there and I wish you good luck on your journey x

  • Fantastic. If you buy some shopping every time you make some money you soon won't have to do a weekly shop at all really. We don't do a weekly shop as I think people buy too much when they do that.

Have you looked at the posts here about frugal living? That will give you advice about eating well for less etc. Food is the easiest thing to cut down on and it doesn't mean eating less but making smarter choices when buying.

Have you cleared out wardrobes yet to sell the excess clothes, bags, belts, shoes etc? Cash for clothes and similar shops and units are an easy way to declutter and earn cash for things that aren't being used and won't be missed anyway.

Sadly there is a lot of people in debt but we here are all of the same mindset in that we want to get out of it and being on this forum is great in that everyone understands as in the same boat and doesnt judge - there is lots of advice and tips on offer and people genuinely want to help so no, you aren't on your own :)

Have you started a Debt Free Wannabe diary on this site- that helps and keeps you motivated i find.

I agree with On My Way in that food is easy to cut down on though i do notice you are on a strict budget for family of 4 anyway but im sure there are still tips to learn which may bring costs down further like freezing left overs - which i have just started doing and i made a lovely bubble and squeak :D, i get 2 meals from stew in that whats left i put a crust on the next day - you get what i mean :)

Stay positive and i look forward to reading your diary :)
