How long should a computer 'tablet' last

Options
In December 2013 we bought, as a Christmas present for our daughter a Samsung tablet computer thingummyjig.

It has now just stopped working.

I know the guarantee states 12 months only, but is 14 months a fair length of time for one of these to last.

Wasn't there some case recently, when somebody had bought an item, I think a TV and the courts said the shop had to replace / repair it even thought it was out of 'their warranty' stating that EU law said an item must last a decent length of time

thank you

Not only EU law, but more importantly UK law says that goods must last a reasonable length of time.

UK law says you have up to six years to seek a remedy from the seller.

Have a read of MSE's Consumer Rights guide for more details.

It depends on exactly which tablet it was, how much was paid and what the fault is.

A 7" Samsung tab 2 bought for say £80 at the end of 2013 that is running slow when running apps would be about right, it is now a very outdated piece of kit and the apps are now designed to run on something more powerful.

However a 10" Samsung tab S bought for £350 at the time should still be running well with the spec comparable to the now entry/mid level tablets.

If it is a problem charging then 9/10 issues are damaged cables or even physical damage to the charging port which wouldn't be covered by the guarantee.

If it has ever been dropped that could also be the cause of it not working, even if it worked for a while after being dropped you don't know what internal damage occurred that is only now bad enough for it to stop working.

It may be worth contacting the retailer or Samsung, they do give 2 year warranties on some of their tabs.

Agree with the above poster, as although it was for a dead 18 months from purchase mobile phone (Samsung Galaxy S3) we contacted Samsung and gave them the serial to be told, it was in still in guarantee, as it had a 24 month Samsung guarantee. We received a pre-paid jiffy bag, packaged it up (taking photos of it, to show no damage to phone and good packaging) and sent it off. Received it back with a new screen, updated software etc within the week. I would contact Samsung.

Suggest a factory reset after charging .
No charge a guess would be it needs a new battery .
Your claim under SOGA is against the vendor .
But usually Samsung offer an additional 24 months LIMITED warranty .Contact Samsung UK support .
  • EU law is 24 months isnt it?
Just in the UK we get extra protection under the reasonable length of time.

"EU law" is that you have the right to seek a remedy from the seller for up to 24 months.

UK law is that you have the right to seek a remedy from the seller for up to 72 months.

I've put "EU law" in quotes because I'm not actually sure what it is, but an EU Directive required all EU states to allow up to 24 months.
The UK did more than they needed to.
  • Where was it purchased from.

Also don't Samsung tablets have 2 years warranty?
