Hi,
My wife is self employed doing some cleaning services.
One of her clients asked her to give a receipt.
Is there any specific format and what details the receipt must have?
Is there any template that she can use?

Unless she is VAT registered there is no legal requirement to give people receipts.
If she does want to give a receipt then it could be whatever you want, half of taxi's just write on the back of a business card £10 or whatever it was etc.0 -
Just write out the name of the customer, the amount received and sign it (maybe put the business name or owners name in clear text underneath).
You can blame Ed Balls for that one!Adventure before Dementia!0 -
She is not VAT register.
So, any bit of paper is good enough?
What does it need to be written on it? her name, client name, value, date, signature?0 -

You can just get a duplicate book in any stationary shop and just write the date and amount and how they paid in it and give to the client/customer.
Re the Ed Balls thing there is no legal requirement for a receipt unless you are registered VAT and are charging it
A receipt for anyone self employed will not mean the person is declaring all their earnings and Ed Ballls is a moron if he thinks a receipt will make the HMRC aware of what you have earned.0 -

Thank you for correcting me :-)

(Sorry the Ed Balls bit was tongue in cheek re his recent spoutings - not suggesting it is a legal requirement - just a suggestion why people might suddenly start asking for receipts!)Adventure before Dementia!0

You can write whatever you want on it, or nothing if you prefer.
As there is no legal requirement to do it there is also no legal specification of what should be on it. I've seen any old scrap of paper used before with just "£50 paid" written on it.
If you want to make it look more "professional" then knock up a quick template and put on the name of your business/ yourself on it, your contact details, maybe the customers details (though clearly most shops dont do this), what they've bought, the date of either the receipt and/ or the date of service(s) and how much it was. You could choose to write "paid" or sign it or something but again Tesco's dont sign your recent when you get your groceries etc.0 -

No.
Simple solution. Go to WH Smith (other stationers are available) and buy a receipt book.
