PC Printer Problem

I have a Hewlett Packard Deckjet 930C and a week or so ago it ran out of black ink. I've been careful with my pennies and bought some refills from e-bay. The orange light on the printer is flashing to say ink needed. When I put the new cartridge in, the orange light is still flashing. I've been working on this since this morning and am at the hair tearing stage! I've been into printer properties and have cleaned the printer heads. But it will not print a page at all. It's not re-setting from the empty cartridge stage.

Any ideas before it goes through the window??

Many thanks.

Is there a little plastic tab that needs to be pulled off? Does it feel the same weight as the empty one?

Rub a piece of paper over the ink outlet nozzle. Does black come out onto the paper?

Yes pulled plastic tab off cartridge.

Yes black ink is coming out onto paper when rubbed.

I think it's something to do with the printer itself. It just doesn't seem to be resetting. Every 15-20 seconds it makes a noise like it's trying to re-set, but it's going nowhere.

Do an internal self test. Press and hold the resume button.

    Does black come through?

    Unplug it from the mains and leave 5mins to drain the power. This might help reset it. If the clicking noise carries on it looks like the cartridge holder can't reset itself, this can be;

    Dirty Rail
    Dry Rail
Foreign object or small piece of paper jamed in the mechanism.

Have unplugged it for over five mins. Have taken the opporunity to have a good look in the printer and have found a black plastic bit floating about. About 1.5 inches long and small thin pencil shape. Don't know if this has snapped off something, hubby thinks it may have, or if one of the kids has thrown it in at some point.

However, once plugged back in. Same thing happening.

Wasn't sure about the 'resume' button. The printer has three buttons 1) on/off. 2) paper feed. 3) a button marked X (not sure what this one does).

Many thanks for your ideas. Got any more?

Is this the first time you've used compatible cartridges?
If it is then I suspect that you may need something to reset the printer to allow it to read the level of a non genuine cartridge.

No, I've used compatible cartridges before with no problem.

Hubby seems to think that something has snapped off inside the printer(previous post) and he's going to have a 'proper look' tomorrow.

It's sod's law though that I've just bought 4 black printer cartridges for it and now the printer's gone kapput!!

    Ah well, ain't life wonderful?

Many thanks for your help, this was my very first posting and it's great to think there is so many helpful people out there. :T
