First Direct & Proof of Identity

First Direct want me to send them proof of identity such as my passport or driving licence and said something about it being verified by a Solicitor or Doctor.
Not sure exactly what they want. Do they need verification by a Solicitor or Doctor because it is a photocopy? If so can I just send the original without having to use a Solicitor or Doctor?
Any assistance much appreciated.
