Yodel Delivery Driver

Hi

I've been out of work for just over 3 months now. I've been living off my own savings, and while they still have a while before they run out completely, I hate seeing them going, down and down.

Anyway, I just saw that Yodel are looking for delivery drivers with their own car, in an area near me.

Has anyone done this job, and what did they think of it? Though I've spent my recent years in a professional job, when I was younger I was a postman, and did curry deliveries (enjoyed it.)

Thought this delivery job would be good for me even if I don't earn a fortune.

There was a report on this type of work on TV recently. Allegedly, the amount you are paid per delivery makes it very difficult to achieve a pay level even close to National Minimum wage. I got the impression that the drivers are self-employed. You'd also obviously need to check your own car insurance to ensure you were covered for commercial use.

You can bet your bottom dollar that SDP insurance has zilch provision for running a business. I doubt if any yodel driver does and I would also bet no yodel executive cares about this either.

I work part time in the "delivery" area. I ride a bike but if using your own vehicle regardless of if their insurance covers you or not you MUST tell your insurance that the vehicle is being used for courier purposes.


The thing most people don't really talk about is what it really costs, out of the money you are paid you have to deal with wear/tear/servicing on your vehicle and to earn a crust in the delivery game your vehicle has to be on the road, roadworthy and reliable and when your going through tyres every 3 months, having a service at the same time etc its not cheap.


You will have to drive at some speed regardless of what the speed limit is if you really want to earn money too. yes yes I know ill get the hate brigade here, I work weekends only as a motorcycle courier (extremely lucky) and to meet deadlines etc on the local runs youll often see me doing 60-70mph on a 40mph road and overtaking pretty much anything that isn't a police car to get where I need to be and quick, the quicker you are the more you earn.


Be prepared for the parking D**ks too. You WILL get parking tickets at some point.


its high stress, but for me the most rewarding part of the job is getting to ride my bike and meeting different people even if it is for just two minutes while they sign for a parcel or package etc.


don't expect it to be easy, have a little set aside for stuff like fines and unexpected bills on the vehicle and you SHOULD be OK.


sorry to be so grim but ive not been doing it long and have seen the downsides very quickly, I get called in all the time to cover for people who didn't realise how demanding/high stress couriering was and quit.


its one of those, its either for you or it isn't. not everyone can hack it.
