Swollen\puffy eyelids advice needed.

Just wondering if anyone has any advice to reduce swollen or puffy eyelids.

I've always had an issue with this and have struggled to work out what I can do to help reduce the problem.

I do wear contact lenses on a daily basis, but haven't worn them for the past couple of weeks due to having an eye infection after having the flu.

I have just finished a course of treatment and have been using Lumecare to help soothe and protect my eyes. However, I just can't understand why my lids are swollen\puffy. I don't have any issues with eyes sticking together or anything, just the puffiness, particular the upper lid.

If anyone can offer suggestions, it would be appreciated.

Also let me say I'm not looking for medical advice.

Sounds like one to have a chat with your doctor/pharmacist about.

I have the same problem on and off, and I've been told by my optician and GP that it's linked to my sinuses (I'm prone to sinus problems).

Do you think you might have developed a sinus infection (perhaps following on from the flu)?

I buy lid wipes from Boots and they sometimes help. There's several brands including Systane, supranettes, and Blepaclean.

Never that about sinus problems. I might give Sudafed a try just to see.

I do suffer with swollen\puffy eyelids on and off too. It doesn't even have to be related to having an infection. I do at times use Blephaclean. In fact I recently bought some and have been using that. Also started taking Priton again just in case I've developed an allergy to something.

Instead of taking random stuff which costs money and may or may not work, have a chat with the pharmacist if you don't want to bother your doctor with it.

I don't feel that I need to speak to a Dr or pharmacist to be honest.

It could be down to an allergic reaction, but I would suggest as others did to speak to your pharmasist or GP.

They'll probably give you more expert advice than you would get here though (no disrespect to all the helpful posters here)

  • Asked the pharmasit as it's a nightmare to get in to see a Dr. Although she didn't directly look at my eyes, she suggested it could be an allergy especially since I have used infected eye drops and ointments. So am giving this Opticrom a try to see if that helps. Failing that, I'm due an eye test so will book in to see an Optician.

I was thinking about using a cold compress or something in the meantime. Not sure if there is anything else.

Assuming you will go and see your GP (just to rule anything out) in the mean time if you want to help sooth an irritated delicate area I'd say use things like Aloe Vera gel, cucumber slices or used cold tea bags for a few minutes. It wont get rid of the puffiness long term if it's being caused by an irritation or there is something else causing the inflammation (which you need to rule out with your GP or a pharmacist).

Other things which can cause puffiness are stress, using small or computerised screens for long durations of time, not drinking enough (or consuming more of things which dehydrate you or cause you to need more water such as salty foods or alcohol), lack of sleep, too much sleep, rubbing your eyes (it can be something that you do without thinking) or sleeping face down.

I'd say by rule of thumb, if your eyes are not just puffy but also slightly warm or itchy then it's likely to be an irritation caused by something which can be prevented and you'd need to speak to someone about working out what was causing things rather than just dealing with the symptoms.
