  • Would you answer the phone to your partner, child's school, parents, etc whilst you are at work if they called?

If so, you have your answer.

One of the companies I worked for wanted to contact me while on holiday, they had the information necessary but failed

(I do not access work email while on holiday unless pre planned and don't have a mobile contact on a lot of trips I do).

The reason was to tell me I was to be made redundant(along with others).
By the time I got back to work they had changed their minds.
  • So are you saying there is no idle chat at all and you worked 100% of the time for the hours of work....

    I doubt it.

Talking whilst opening the post is not the same as someone calling you at home

My OH only calls in a emergency and that is more important than work will ever be even when i am work. I do get calls from work occasionally asking me in for extra hours but i tend to ignore them.

There isn't any post to open in the office here so good job that isn't the only opportunity to talk!

I think many might adopt a hard attitude when they aren't treated very nice or fairly but if you are given a lot of slack and your bosses treat you well..then I don't see why anyone would want to stir or create (possibly) any kind of bad feeling.

Work phoned me once while I was on 'holiday' as they wanted to know if I would go and work in another store for a couple of weeks and the start day was my day back, so they needed to know if I would do it. I had no problem with this.

A month or so ago I was off and when I returned I found out that another member of the team had been ill and so my manager was working stupid shifts to cover the absence, I asked why she hadn't called me to help out and her response was that I was on holiday and she knew that if I knew I would have come in and she didn't want that.

I have no problem with them phoning if they have to. But then we do work in a close team and that's just the way we are with each other :)

Not all places treat staff well or give any slack

When I was made redundant my boss said "if we need to know anything about your job we can call you" - "erm no as I would no longer work here" :)
  • I was called and txt on mobile, called on home phone on the day of and during my daughters graduation, this was to cover a shift 2 days later,i had used a days a/l for this.poor management in my opinion.edited to add management knew the reason for a/l.

Outside work, I am unavailable. Work does not have my mobile number - my mobile, my number. I'm not paid to be available and I need the away-time to de-stress and switch off. The only time I would expect work to call me at home would be if the building was to be closed due to fire / H&S etc. and staff couldn't attend work that day.

I don't read my work email when away from work. On my return, I read the emails asking for help with a wry smile because they were asking for things I could not have done while away (the "tools" necessary for the task are at work) and/or things they could easily solve if they thought about it for a minute instead of taking the easy option of asking me.

There are no Brownie points to be earned by taking work calls etc - they just know you're a mug for agreeing and they will then do it even more.

If I sound mean, I do this the other way round too - I would never try to contact my boss unless specifically asked to. I try to ask everything before they go and if problems crop up, I solve them myself or ask someone at work for help. Before I go away, I make sure everyone has the info I know they'll need while I'm away.

"Er, YES. At my usual freelance hourly rate, of course...". :D
