rooting unlocking phone

I wasn't certain which section to post this as it's a technical question about a mobile phone. Apologies if it's in the wrong section.
I bought my daughter an orange san fransisco 2 mobile phone about 3 years back. I'm looking at moving away from orange/EE and thinking of rooting the phone.
I have selected the Fish n Chips RLS7 Rom to install.
My question for the techies out there is, Will I need to unlock the phone first or will rooting the phone and installing this rom acheive unlocking the phone in one process? Thanks

Ask EE to unlock it, once its done you can load any rom you want, with most Android handsets the lock and the rom are two different things.
I'd check http://www.xda-developers.com/ for some great help.

As above, get an unlock code from EE. Or buy one off Ebay.
Unlocking and Rooting are two different things. Check out Nexus Root Toolkit.0 -
Unlocking lets you use a phone on any network. Applies to most phones this century
Rooting is an Android (Linux/Unix) term that gives the user elevated priveleges to mess about with things they're not normally allowed to do - like installing new ROMS.
Totally separate things.0 -

Actually he might be talking about unlocking the bootloader (rather than unlocking the carrier network) which wouldn't be totally unrelated to rooting. He mentioned he wanted to install a new ROM which would require an unlocked bootloader.
Anyway, this site has useful guides on how to unlock the network and how to install a new ROM.
