Personaly I use the Linux operating system, for which there is a whole range of free software. (you need to be a bit techie - though it is getting easier)
However there is other free software around - a good source is
www. Sourceforge.net - they have scores of software of all different types.
You could also try TurboCash - (https://www.turbocashuk.com)0 -
I did use Quicken for a while but found it easier to knock up a spreadsheet in Excel. A lot of Quicken seemed irrelevent to me.
Here's a good free one, Money Manager:

Here's another although it appears very US-centric

This was discussed a few months back. I personally just use a a notebook and then update a excel/Open Office spreadsheet as I have found the rest a little to complicated for what I want to do.
A peice of software that I do have and found excellent and I know has received constantly good reviews is Acemoney Lite. This is like Quicken ect but the Lite version of the package is totally free.

Quicken is not supported in the UK anymore by the manufacturers, so I've just started using Quickbooks for business and personal. It's quite pricey for a beginner so I'm expecting to grow the business at some point, when I'm more organised, and I think it's going to get too complicated for spreadsheets.Having used it long enough to really comment on it. I just went to my accountant and talked to him about my goals for the future on a personal and professional level and this is what he suggested.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. See which programs your bank online service supports regarding statement download. Most do Quicken, though increasingly there is support for Money.
I use MS Money. Its pretty easy to get to grips with, and I can download statements from Lloyds directly into my file. Makes things a lot easier.
It has a lot of reporting features that let you see who is getting your money, create budgets for upcoming events (e.g. weddings, new car, house, retirement) reminds you when you have bills to pay, and lets you plot your wealth into the future to see how you'll be financially in x years time if your income/expenditure stays the same.
The best thing for me though is the automatic stock price update. I have all my shares recorded and each time I use Money it automatically looks online for the current share prices and updates itself. Its set up like a web browser and on the home page it summarises how my investments have done, reports on my income and expenditure for that month, and lets me know of any tasks that are outstanding.
It'll also do your tax I think, though I've not got that stuff set up.
MS Money is about 20 quid and its cash well spent. If your bank supports it....0
