Disputed Accounts

Options
Good Afternoon Folks.

I am on a DMP with PayPlan.
I have struggled with depression for years and have been on and off drug therapy and am currently in counselling, which is opening my mind and is turning out to be very beneficial.

Basically I have several accounts that I wish to query due to additional charges been added to the account etc.

These accounts go back a couple of years but for the first time my head is much clearer and is becoming much wiser to such things that actually worsened my situation at the time.

My first question; do I still have the right to lodge the complaint after a couple of years?
I am still paying off the accounts.

My second question; can I query closed accounts which I have settled but I can see from my credit report ridiculous fees were applied at the time?

Third question; if I am disputing the accounts, should I be making no payments or token payments?

Many thanks for your help - Mrs_Hutchins :)
One step at a time :)

    Hello Mrs Hutchins

I’m glad to hear your counselling is having some positive results.

You do have the right to question and complain about issues with an account after a few years, and it shouldn’t matter whether the account has been paid off or not.

I think it’s best to continue paying an account if you think you still owe some of it. If you think that the whole outstanding balance is made up of disputed charges then you can stop paying until the creditor can prove that you are liable. You should discuss this with Payplan first though.

You can request a copy of the credit agreements a statement of the account to check the fees and charges using our factsheet and sample letter here:

It’s a good idea to start a complaint process in writing, and you can escalate a complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) after 8 weeks if necessary. The FOS have some information for making complaints here:
