Joke Management

Hi all,

I helped a colleague return to work a few weeks ago.

I worked out-of-hours to do this. I phoned him loads of times, texted him and sent emails.

I even agreed with management that I would manage his work for a few weeks even though it was not my job to do this. I provided mentoring and coaching to him when he returned.

Amazed and disappointed that my management refused to compensate me for my phone costs or to give me any time off work.

What have I done ? Simple answer is that I have taken extra long lunch breaks. Go to staff restaurant and then have a long walk outside. Our clocking in/out system only records when you go outside the building. It does not show how long you spend in the restaurant.

I have spent up to 1.5hrs during my lunch break over the last few weeks; so I have actually recovered my time and more as well effectively recovering my phone call costs with my lunch breaks. For P&C reasons, I work cross-shifts and do not have anyone managing me. For info, I am only entitled to a 1hr lunch break each day.

Do I feel guilty ? NO I don't. If my management had acted with integrity, they would have acted properly.

Roll on next week

  • Did you offer to help them or did management come to you about it?

I offered to help them AFTER agreeing with my colleague that he okay with him managing him for a few weeks.
  • You should have arranged agreements before hand rather than going to them afterwards.

And ultimately, if your employers find out you are falsifying your time sheets expect disciplinary action to occur

Why do you feel the company owe you for something you offered to do?

When making agreements with management why did you not discuss what you expected in return?

If they find out it's not likely to end well for you.

Riveting tale. In a similar vein, I stayed late on Tuesday so finished early yesterday. Yay!

They won't find out lol !! How can they when I am not managed or monitored ?

For those taking the moral high ground, I repeat that I do not feel guilty lol !!

    BTW, we don't do timesheets.

Oh sorry, did you want us to get the violin out rather than point out your complete stupidity?

Hmm, a post on a forum maybe? Other staff noticing how long you're spending in the restaurant or walking around? CCTV?

Well you should. You offered to help. You can't volunteer yourself and then after moan about no compensation. It doesn't work that way.

If you don't want to help someone out just as a kind gesture then come to an agreement beforehand and don't help until you have the agreement you want.

I don't understand why you posted about this, but just because you think you've found a way to outsmart them doesn't mean you have.

    complete stupidity?

Stupid when I am taking 1.5hr lunch break.

The stupidity is management not acting professionally :).

Nobody can identify me on this forum lol !

No CCTV in restaurant and there is hardly anyone in the restaurant when I go there. For those that are, they don't recognise me and I don't work with them.

CCTV outside yes but I always make sure that I am less than 45mins outside. I have always got the Equality Act 2010 as fall back if I need longer.
