Needing to return from overseas, what options are there?

This is not for me, but for some friends/neighbours.

They have moved out to Spain, been there 12 years, now in their mid-70's and wish to come back to the UK.

Problem: Property in Spain has not appreciated, property where they came from has. They came from the Edmonton/Tottenham/Enfield part of London, and have children in these areas. None of them are in a position to assist their parents, nor have any spare rooms in their properties.

The max they can hope for is around £90k, which will not get them anything in this area. They are not after a mansion, but a ground floor flat would be ideal.

What options do they have?

    Rent seems the obvious answer?

Private tenant rents seems to be very expensive.

This is one of the risks of selling up when moving overseas. We were advised not to sell up before we moved overseas for this very reason.

It sounds like they may need to broaden the scope of their search area if both buying and renting in their first choice area is too expensive.

I have to endorse the idea of looking for somewhere to live further afield where it is cheaper.
