putting curls and volume into my hair

I am looking for inspiration.. :) My hair is looking a bit flat these days (ok it doesn't help that I'm needing to wear a winter hat outdoors at the moment which seems to squash it down..) and I am trying to think of ways to get some curl and volume back into my hair.

I thought of 2 things: maybe heated rollers or a body wave. I am not sure I am brave enough to go for the latter option just yet, as I don't think perms are very 'in' these days and the younger stylists maybe don't have that much experience of doing them. I have heard horror stories of people coming out looking like a poodle :rotfl: Not quite the look I am aiming for.

My hair's naturally neither straight nor curly, if that makes sense, and it's not that long at the moment - between chin and shoulder length. It seems everyone's using straighteners these days, so I might be a bit out of sync with everybody else by wanting curls and volume, but straightened hair really does not suit me.

Does anyone else here use rollers or heated rollers? If so could you recommend me any? Or if anyone's had a bodywave did that work for you and was it very expensive?
