Root canal treatment cost

Hi
My 19 year old sister has been advised to have Root Canal Treatment for her Upper Molar.
I am told it is an expensive treatment and wont be done under NHS,
Anybody who had it done knows how much it costs and after care required.
We do not have Health Insurance.

I had root canal treatment on the NHS about 2 years ago and according to the NHS website it is still available on the NHS. Perhaps ring around for a different dentist?

It is done on the NHS but it is quite time consuming so perhaps some dentists are reluctant to do it within the constraints of the NHS.

Molars can be quite tricky. Three roots or more that can often be quite curved (=difficult).

19 is quite young to be needing such work. Why has the tooth broken down so quickly? Are there diet issues that need to be addressed?

With the patient being so young, it's easily possible that the dentist has recommended going to see a private specialist endodontist to get the best outcome possible.

The dentist could have done it himself on the NHS - but if it then fails after a few years - it would either be a gap, or even more expensive implant.

What would be a bit naughty would be if her NHS dentist has refused to do it on the NHS - but offered to do it himself privately. All NECESSARY treatment for an NHS patient SHOULD be offered on the NHS

depending on the complexity a re treatment may count as advanced care - depending on the area the LAT or LHB may not have commissioned advanced care.

For what its worth, If I were to have a re treatment done I would see someone confident in their likely outcome not just someone who charges for it. I would see an endodontist or someone with a special interest and all the equipment. Or wait to see how long te NHS referral would take

Our dentist says it wont be done under NHS-period.
Lots of people are saying it could/should be done under NHS!!
Any advice?

i have just had specialised root canal treatment ( private though) and it cost me £400 - that included all x-rays etc ( mine was pretty difficult as i have virtually no canal which prob accounts for the high cost)

The patient needs to ask the dentist why it is not being done under the NHS.

If the tooth has been previously root treated, then it is very likely not to be done under the NHS.

If there is another reason, it needs to be made clear.

It may be that the option was discussed, but is not the recommended course of treatment due to whatever caused this problem in the first place (usually sugar).

Find another dentist.

It wasn't an issue for me. I needed an extraction, I needed a root filling so it was done. Ok it cost £219 for band C but it was worth it.
